As the U.S. reconsiders its long-term spent nuclear fuel strategy, opportunities are emerging to co-locate storage, fuel handling, and reprocessing functions within secure nuclear energy sites. This approach could reduce transportation risks, optimize infrastructure, and enable a more circular fuel cycle—yet it also raises challenging questions about safety oversight, waste classification, and community consent. This session will convene experts in nuclear policy, environmental management, and local governance to examine how site reuse and integrated siting can advance safety, efficiency, and transparency in the next generation of nuclear infrastructure.
