ENERGY COMMUNITIES ALLIANCE

The Energy Communities Alliance (ECA) is the only non-profit, membership organization of local governments adjacent to or impacted by U.S. Department of Energy activities. We bring together local government officials to share information, establish policy positions, and promote community interests to address an increasingly complex set of constituent, environmental, regulatory, and economic development needs. >> LEARN MORE

NEW FROM ECA

The Energy Communities Alliance (ECA) recently released the Guide to Successful Environmental Cleanup, an interactive online resource that provides frequently asked questions, case studies, and recommendations regarding nuclear waste cleanup. To assist local government officials, their communities, and federal agencies in deciphering the complexities of the environmental cleanup process, ECA developed this guide to facilitate future successful cleanups.

The guide focuses on seven key areas: cleanup basics; establishing site priorities; community engagement; managing risk; federal budget issues; economic issues; and environmental laws and regulations.

NEw Nuclear Missions

Energy Communities Alliance (ECA) Board of Directors created a unique self-funded initiative to define the role of local governments in supporting the development of the new nuclear technologies.

Some of the projects that ECA will focus on include small modular reactors, micro and advanced reactors, a skilled nuclear workforce and new nuclear missions around the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) federal facilities.

A new path forward for nuclear waste? - Doe releases rfi for consent-based siting

DOE released an RFI on using a consent-based siting process to identify federal interim storage facilities. ECA has long anticipated this action and we hope it marks the meaningful resumption of the Department’s efforts – as it is the federal government’s responsibility – to manage and dispose of the Country’s defense and commercial high-level radioactive nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel.

Hear from Jim Schaefer, Senior Managing Director at Guggenheim Securities, on the investor outlook for advanced nuclear development. Jim was a featured speaker this summer at the ECA Forum on New Nuclear Development in Salt Lake City, and provides additional input in light of the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.

In addition to Jim, ECA also hosted Steve Comello from the EFI Foundation, the 501c3 arm of the Energy Futures Initiative. EFI and the EFI Foundation - founded by former U.S. Energy Secretary Ernie Moniz - are organizations dedicated to harnessing the power of technology and policy innovation to accelerate the clean energy transition.

ECA’s New Nuclear Initiative aims to help communities become knowledgeable about - and in many ways driven by - the nuclear missions they already host, be an integral part of the nuclear future. In partnership with the Nuclear Innovation Alliance, this webinar provides a briefing on Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technology: A Primer.

In December 2022, the Department of Energy announced a historic milestone was reached for fusion power. This webinar covers everything you want to know about fusion and the potential commercialization of the technology.
